Individuals Coming Off Slimming Jabs Regain Pounds at a Quadrupled Rate Than People Using Diet and Exercise
New research suggests that patients who come off blockbuster GLP-1 drugs like semaglutide or tirzepatide may regain lost weight much more quickly than those who end traditional lifestyle plans.
Published data in a major health publication points out that while overweight individuals can lose about a fifth of their body weight while on the medication, the weight is regained at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.
"People using these drugs should be cognizant of the risk of quick rebound weight gain when the medication concludes," cautioned lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
That rate of regain suggests a reversion to original mass in about 18 months.
Analyzing Approaches
The research, which looked at dozens of trials involving over 9,000 of patients, contrasted the results of GLP-1 agonists with conventional dieting.
The team point out that people who lose weight through dieting typically experience a less rapid weight regain—around 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.
The Reason for the Fast Rebound
Nutrition scientists propose the way of the injections explains the heightened weight return.
GLP-1 drugs mimic a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which moderates feelings of fullness.
"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 levels several times higher than the body's typical production might result in the system to produce less of its endogenous GLP-1, and may also diminish responsiveness to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.
"Withdrawal of this hormone supplement results in hunger is unsuppressed, making binge eating far more likely."
A Lifelong Issue?
Medical guidelines suggest the injections for people with weight-linked health risks, alongside prescribed lifestyle changes.
A number of clinicians contend that, given the significant potential of relapse, the therapy is often ongoing.
This opinion is reinforced by pharmaceutical companies, who say that the findings "emphasize the chronic nature of excess weight," comparing it to managing conditions like diabetes.
Patient Testimonies
Individuals who have stopped the jabs explain a powerful return of cravings.
"It felt as if a trigger that goes on and you become starving," said a patient.
The struggle is compounded if patients have not adopted permanent lifestyle or habit changes during therapy.
Significant Adoption
Figures suggest that millions of adults in the UK have used these injections in the last 12 months, with demand remaining high.
- Adoption is greater among females than men.
- The middle-aged age group shows the greatest usage rates.
- A large proportion obtain the medications through private healthcare rather than public health services.
Ultimately, experts caution that while these medications are effective agents for weight loss, they are not a standalone cure and maintained weight loss likely depends on integrated lifestyle support.
